The Ruth McDonald Butterfly Garden
Ruth McDonald was a willing and very capable member of our committee in 2014, before the Farm was open.
Ruth was a very active member of the fundraising committee and brought in thousands of donor dollars. She helped to promote the Farm to anyone that would listen.
Her family business, the Old McDonald's Furniture and Appliance store, made a large donation to the Farm with the request that the Farm create a butterfly garden. A small temporary garden was planted, and in 2019, the large circular Ruth McDonald Butterfly Garden became a reality. The garden is now a place for birds, bees, butterflies and all kinds of other pollinators and insects to enjoy. Many people love to visit the garden, wander through, or sit and admire the garden.
When the Farm opened in 2017, Ruth and her friend Judy rented north and south neighbouring plots #13 and #8. They both loved it, laughing away together as they were planting, weeding and harvesting and often having a picnic lunch afterwards. She eventually moved to Prince Edward County, but her interest in the Farm never wavered.
We lost a keen member of the Farm on March 16, 2024.
We encourage everyone to visit and have a walk around the Farm. Ruth McDonald helped to make it happen.
