The Schomberg Bee N Bee Project
Insects are disappearing from our planet, and pollinators are amongst them. Pollinators are vital to our ecosystem and we need to help protect them. To help create awareness of this issue, this large Insect Hotel The Schomberg Bee N Bee has been designed and built at The Schomberg Community Farm.
Designed by Steve Fisher and built by Steve and his friend Geoffrey Sprawson. Both recently retired Designer/Engineers, with help from Wesley Killman and Cheryl Fisher. The area was also assessed for enhancement, and 69 native shrubs were planted by community volunteers.
All funding was provided by The Regional Municipality of York.
What are pollinators?
Pollinators are animals that help plants reproduce by transferring pollen from one to another. They are critical in the production of many crops and essential in creating and preserving biodiversity.
Types of pollinators: Bats, Bees, Beetles, Birds, Butterflies, Flies, Moths, Wasps.
All pollinators have an essential, often-overlooked role in our economy. By pollinating many crops humans consume and trade, they are essential to our food security. Estimations are that approximately 75 per cent of the world’s flowering plants and 35 per cent of global food crops depend on animal pollinators to produce.
Fun fact: More than 800 bee species are native to Canada and more than 400 of those are in Ontario! The province is a bee diversity hot spot. In fact, Toronto was named Canada’s first “Bee City” in 2017 and King Township is on the Bee Cities list too!
